The Haunted - Story behind the film
A truly haunting story...
From 1974 to 1987 in the town of West Pittston, Pennsylvania one of America's most terrifying haunting's took place. It was at the home of Jack and Janet Smurl; the case received wide attention in the media. Although the house went through three exorcisms and investigations by demonologists the entity refused to leave. The haunting's were turned in to a book and later a movie both named "The Haunted".
Jack and Janet Smurl had moved to West Pittston from Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania to escape the flooding damage left behind from hurricane Agnes in 1972. They moved into a duplex Jack's parents had purchased, sharing the house with them. Jack and Janet and their two daughters, Dawn and Heather lived in one half, and Jack's parents lived in the other. The house had been built in 1896, and was on a quiet street in a middle class neighborhood.
Both Jack and Janet had grown up in the area, meeting in 1967 and marrying in 1968. Jack served in the Navy, becoming a neuropsychiatric technician. Both the Smurl's were raised in Catholic homes and had strong religious beliefs. They enjoyed living with Jacks' parents and had no trouble sharing the duplex with them. The family did some remodeling and redecorating work on the house, settled into it, and Jack and Janet added twin girls Shannon and Carin to the family. The first 18 months on Chase St. were happy ones.
In January 1974, a year and a half after moving in, the atmosphere in the house began to change. It all started with the appearance of a stain on the new carpet. Several days later the television burst into flames. Then the events became more disturbing the newly fitted sink and bathtub were found severely scratched as if a large animal had clawed at them. Freshly painted woodwork in the bathroom also showed similar scratches.
In 1975, their oldest daughter Dawn repeatedly saw people "floating" around her bedroom. The paranormal activity in the house increased toilets would flush without anyone using them, footsteps would be continuously heard on the stairs, drawers would open and close on their own accord, radios would blare although they were unplugged and empty rocking chairs would mysteriously rock and creak as if someone were actually sitting in them. As time went on, they began to smell sour and vile smells throughout the house and on several occasions, Jack felt the touch of an unseen hand caress him.
By January 1985 the poltergeist activity was no longer confined to Jack and Janet's side of the Duplex. Jack parents, John and Mary were also subjected to frightening events. The house would become icy cold, and they would hear what appeared to be violent shouting on Jack and Janet's side of the home, with abusive, foul language.

A Belsize Park woman whose home was broken into 13 times in a week claims police told her to exorcise her flat as they suspected ghosts might be behind the break-ins.
A Belsize Park woman whose home was broken into 13 times in a week claims police told her to exorcise her flat as they suspected ghosts might be behind the break-ins.
Caroline Williams, 39, of Howitt Road, has sought refuge at her parents’ Hampstead home after her locks were picked, her personal possessions stolen or moved, and strange notes of poetry stuck to her fridge.
Ms Williams, who volunteered for this year’s Hampstead Summer festival committee, called the police.
But she claims officers refused to dust for fingerprints and blamed the unexplained intrusions on the supernatural.
She said: “Police said this is completely unexplained and there’s no point taking forensics – this is about other forces that are not human. They said, we suggest you get an exorcism.
“I don’t think spirits take purses and I don’t think they can move magnetic poetry.”
The former executive director of charity Weight Concern, added: “This is traumatic and distressing. I’m a strong person and I’ve tried to rise above it but when you have no proper support from the police from this kind of danger, that’s the biggest problem.
“I’ve had poetry left on my fridge using magnetic letter fridge magnets, black and yellow hazard tape left on my garden steps, roses left on my floor.
“I’ve had a bowl smashed and I’ve had things taken. It is very strange.
“I’m a single woman in a flat and I’m absolutely terrified, but I have been told not to call the boys in blue.”
The police have denied advising her to carry out an exorcism.
Ms Williams moved into her flat two years ago and said she used to wake up to find her front and back doors wide open, but had brushed it off as her being absent minded.
But she suspects more sinister forces are behind the latest spate of break-ins.
She first noticed something was awry when she returned home from the shops last week to find her front and back doors wide opened.
She called a locksmith, but within minutes of his departure her doors had been broken into again.
“The locksmith came back and he said that he had never seen anybody unpick a mortic lock he had installed in his time as a locksmith,” she said.
“It is totally unexplained.”
Her home was targeted a further 12 times.
A police spokesman said: “Police in Camden received a report of two crime related incidents on June, 19, on Howitt Road. Officers attended and investigated all possible lines of enquiry and the case has now been closed.”
Ghost hunters spooked by figure in Highgate Cemetery
Two ghost hunters were spooked when they ran into a spirit in Highgate Cemetery without their specialist equipment.
North London Paranormal Investigators Micky Gocool, 46, and Louise Roche, 23, were giving their newly recruited medium a tour of their patch when they encountered a tall, dark, eerie figure.
Mr Gocool, who spoke to the Haringey Independent in April after bumping into George Michael in Highgate during an investigation, said: “That is the first time in my life that I felt frightened – it was just meant to be a tour for our new medium.
“I was really shocked because I didn’t know what to do – I felt like I was a member of the public again because I really didn’t know what to do.”
The team, who claim they saw the ghost just after 10pm on Wednesday, June 20, arrived in Highgate without specialist equipment used to track and record spirits.
Mr Gocoolsaid the team at first thought the vision was a vampire rumoured to frequent Highgate Cemetery, but he believes it is more likely to be the spirit of an undertaker.
He added: “I really did not expect that, but it is really not a sinister presence. He is a normal every day average Joe Public but because he is so tall he actually looks like a vampire.”
The ghost, which vanished after a split second, was also a shock for new medium Gemma Louise Pugh who only started with the team six weeks ago.
Mr Gocool, from Lordship Lane in Wood Green, describes himself as an investigator rather than a psychic, because the team gather supernatural evidence before allowing people to make up their own minds.
The team carries out investigations on houses and public spaces in and around north London looking for evidence of supernatural activity.

EXTREME RESEARCH!
The Xtreme Team headed down to Tulleys farm, home of Shocktoberfest to have a look at their Halloween attractions and how they work. We spent the day with Stuart from Tulleys Farm and Ian from FUN FEAR. The Xtreme Team had vip access to the Halloween mazes, learning how they worked, special effects, sound and lighting.
Staurt and Ian were kind enough to set up "The Cellar", an intense maze full of zombies for us to experience.

L.A. Film Festival: 'Vampira and and Me' is a portrait of a pioneer
L.A. Film Festival: 'Vampira and
and Me' is a portrait of a pioneer
If on Saturday night in Los Angeles you noticed a shortage of the sort of vintage-inspired women who sport goth-y looks with blunt bangs and the skull-ring, pork-pie hat wearing men who accompany them, that might have been because they were out in full force for the world premiere of the documentary “Vampira And Me.” Screening as part of the doc competition at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, the film is a portrait of Maila Nurmi, the woman who created the enduring character of Vampira.
“It was important to me that this film premiere in Los Angeles, because despite what you might have seen in a film called ‘Ed Wood,’ Maila Nurmi never had a world premiere, or a Hollywood premiere, for any film she was featured in,” said filmmaker R.H. Greene to introduce the screening. “Welcome to Maila Nurmi’s Hollywood premiere.”
The story of Nurmi and Vampira is a story of the early days of television, the difficulty of translating notoriety to something more lasting and the fleeting nature of fame, as well as a lovingly affectionate look at a headstrong, determinedly independent woman who never received the credit or acclaim she deserved. Vampira lived on, even as Nurmi faded into poverty and obscurity.
After being discovered at a Halloween party dressed as a variation on Morticia Addams, Nurmi went on the air in 1954 as host of a local L.A. late-night movie show, where she honed the arch characterization of Vampira that was in many ways a subversion of 1950s female stereotypes. Following a few appearances on other programs, as well as failed attempts to expand Vampira to a national show, Nurmi’s star faded. She came to rue her appearance in Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” infamously referred to as the worst movie ever made. The rest of her life would be a struggle.
Precious little footage of Nurmi performing as Vampira is known to exist; Greene bought one bit from EBay and turned up additional footage uncataloged in an archive. Greene’s 1997 on-camera interview with Nurmi — who died in 2008 — forms the spine of the film, with the filmmaker eschewing other talking-head interviews to maintain a sense that this is Nurmi telling her own story. There are mentions of Marlon Brando, Elvis Presley, Liberace and, most importantly, James Dean, with whom Nurmi, by her telling, for a time was extremely close.
“The wonderful thing about the age we’re in now is so much is findable,” Greene said after the screening. “I loved Maila, but I didn’t always trust her stories. But now, at this point in the evolution of the Internet, you can check out a lot of stuff. And most of them hold up completely. The only place where Maila gets dicey is when something has too much pain around it, or even worse, too much rejection.”
At one point in the on-camera interview, Greene stops Nurmi before she begins to cry rather than letting her sob on-camera. That sort of compassion for its subject becomes something of a talisman for the film, which never shies away from acknowledging the darker corners of Nurmi’s story without needlessly dwelling there.
“It’s really hard to make a movie about someone you love. I had never done that before,” Greene said. “I acknowledge that. If anybody here thinks that as a documentarian I punked out because I loved her and I wouldn’t tell you everything I know, then [to heck with] you. You make one. But it will be very hard to get an interview with her, I think.”
When the festival’s artistic director, David Ansen, moderating the post-screening Q&A, asked Greene if “Vampira And Me” had been a labor of love, the filmmaker responded, “It was certainly that.”
"Vampira and Me" screens again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Regal Cinemas at L.A. Live.

'Sinister' Trailer: Ethan Hawke Brings the Thrills for Halloween
Scott Derrickson's film stars Hawke as a crime novelist who moves into a home where a family was murdered nine months earlier.
Horror movie fans are in for a real treat this Halloween from the producer of Paranormal Activity and Insidious and the writer/director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The trailer of Scott Derrickson’s newest film, Sinister, was released today and will be bringing the thrills to theaters on October 5.
The film stars Ethan Hawke as a crime novelist father who moves into a not-so-pleasant but affordable house with his family.
The trailer begins with the family moving into the house of a family who was murdered nine months ago. Hawke's character, Ellison, explains to his family that he’s going to write, “the best book anybody’s ever read” while at the house. Viewers know as soon as he says, “I got a really good feeling about this,” that something must go wrong.
Ellison finds old footage in the attic (perhaps playing homage to movies such as The Ring) of the previous families and their murders. After bringing the film to the police and consulting with Professor Jonas, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, he learns that the one thing that connects the videos together is a symbol: the pagan deity who consumes the souls of human children. This isn’t very good news for Ellison, who is the father of two children.
Ellison finds the diety, Bagul, in photographs and footage, and learns from Jonas that it is said Bagul lives in the pictures and they may be gateways into his realm. Jonas adds that children exposed to these images are particularly vulnerable to Bagul’s abductions. Naturally, the daughter Ashley (Clare Foley) views the images and all hell breaks loose.
Ashley starts painting pictures of the previously murdered girl Stephanie (Victoria Leigh) proving that little girls in horror movies make the movie all the more terrifying.
Then of course, Ashley is found in a box and appears contorted and screaming, Exorcist-style.
Ellison then burns the footage after finding Bagul’s symbols throughout the house, and tells his wife Tracy (Juliet Rylance) to get the kids and pack the car so they can make their escape. That probably doesn’t work out as planned.
The trailer ends with a montage of scary clips such as paintings of children and Bagul on the wall, an ax being dragged, people running, and children sitting on the floor, faces painted as the deity, watching a projection of the movie’s villain. Bagul then pops out in typical horror-movie fashion, scaring Ellison and the audience.
With the tagline “Once you see him, nothing can save you,” Sinister should bring screams this Halloween.

Simon Pegg proud of Halloween costume
Simon Pegg thinks he has created the "the easiest Halloween costume ever" thanks to a certain big screen role.
The British actor starred as Shaun in comedy zombie film Shaun of the Dead. Simon says the loveable character created a wealth of opportunity for fans to re-create his on-screen outfits.
"There have been quite a few with people dressed as me. But I think that's always more weird for them than it is for me. There was a guy who came to my door on Halloween dressed as me and he was slightly surprised when I opened the door. But then that was our fault for creating what is essentially the easiest Halloween costume ever with Shaun of the Dead," he quipped to Shortlist magazine.
"You just need a short-sleeved white shirt and a red tie and you're off."
Simon has reunited with his co-stars for Star Trek 2. Cast members include Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Simon has joked that his attractive co-stars also have personalities to match their looks.
"Yeah, it was lovely to see everyone and we all get on well. For good-looking, young Hollywood types, they're actually all nice," he laughed.

Halloween Actor Dies
Actor Richard Lynch, famous for his roles in countless sci-fi series and horror films, has died at the age of 76, his rep confirms to Fox411.com.
“It’s with deep sorrow that I learned last night that my client and friend Richard Lynch was found dead at his home in Palm Springs, CA,” Mike Baronas told Fox411 in a statement.
Lynch made a name for himself in Hollywood playing the role of villains and nemeses due to his distinctive appearance. Lynch reportedly suffered scarring in 1967 after he accidentally set himself on fire while under the influence of LSD. It later became part of his signature look in the more than 100 film and television appearances he made, including films like “Scarecrow” and Rob Zombie’s “Halloween,” as well as in shows like “Battlestar Galactica” and “The A-Team.”
Lynch’s body was found by actress Carol Vogel, Baronas said. After not hearing from Lynch for several days, she stopped by his home Tuesday to find the door ajar.
“When she entered, she discovered him lying on the kitchen floor. She proceeded to call 911 although his body was cold and lifeless,” Baronas said.
“From what I currently understand, no investigation into the cause of his death will be made as his body was sent directly to a funeral home,” he said.
Lynch’s latest role was in the 2012 horror film,”The Lords of Salem,” directed by Rob Zombie.
Zombie expressed sorrow at the news of Lynch’s death, writing on his Facebook page, “I woke up this morning to the news that our friend Richard Lynch has passed away. Richard was great to work with and really gave it his all. I will never forget the way he scared the crap out of the kid actors in Halloween. As soon as I said action! He dove right into his role of Principle Chambers at top volume. He will be missed.”
Fox411.com's Hollie McKay contributed to this report.

"This little park in Leicestershire is normally off limits to all adult groups, however tonight all were welcome as the park opened its gates and became a full on gore fest for Halloween for one night only. This was a true Halloween event, which saw many kids traumatised, as well as Adults and really raised the bar for UK Halloween events."
